Pratap G. Pawar, Chairman


Chairman of Sakal Media Group, Mr. Pratap Pawar is an Engineer from the prestigious BITS, Pilani. He is an industrialist and a man with vision. He has been on the Board of Sakal since 1985, and the newspaper has grown by leaps and bounds under his able leadership. Having a presence in entire Maharashtra and Goa, Sakal is now not restricted to being a ‘newspaper’ but is a ‘brand’ in itself. ‘Saptahik Sakal’, ‘Agro-won’, ‘Family Doctor’ are some of its examples.

Mr. Pawar is the former President of The Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture, Pune, the First President of the Federation of Chambers and Associations all over Maharashtra, President of The Indian Newspaper Society, New Delhi for the year 2001-2002, and President, Indian Language Newspapers Association in 2005-2006. He was appointed on the Board of Directors of the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) in January 2007 and was made Vice President of the Board of Directors in June, 2007.

He is also the Chairman of Ajay Metachem group of Industries and a Director on the Boards of various Indian listed companies like Bharat Forge Ltd, Kirloskar Oil Engines Ltd, Finolex Cables Ltd, Force Motors Ltd. He is also on the Board of the Pan Gulf Group Limited, UK.

Apart from his corporate engagements, Mr. Pawar has contributed immensely to the society as well. Mr. Pawar is a Trustee on number of Socio-Educational Institutions in Pune and takes active part in the development of these organizations/trusts. Some of them are Dr. Nanasaheb Parulekar Sakal Charity Trust, Pune, Students Welfare Association, Pune, Poona School and Home for Blind, Kirloskar Foundation, Balgram – SOS Children’s village, Yeravada, Pune Balkalyan Sanstha, Sakal India Foundation, BAIF Development Research Foundation, Pune, Niradhar.


Abhijit Pawar, Managing Director


Mr. Abhijit Pawar has been the Managing Director of the Sakal Media Group since 2004.

The Sakal Media Group has reached greater heights under Mr. Pawar’s leadership with the launch of the SAAM TV channel, the first and only agriculture daily, AGROWON, the first newspaper in our state with a focus on children – Young Buzz and the first regional newspaper to go online. Some other feathers in the SMG cap gathered during Mr. Pawar’s tenure are – first media company to organize events & exhibitions as well as the first media group to implement 6-sigma processes across the company.

As Managing Director of the Sakal Media Group, Mr. Pawar’s focus has been on the ability of the group to steer social change and transformation. He has created a unique media model called the ST7 model based on a concept of ‘Return on Respect.’ The ST7 model evaluates all initiatives based on their social impact; with an innovative, solution-based approach to addressing society’s challenges while drawing in the participation of stakeholders across the spectrum.

It was under Mr. Pawar’s guidance that the Group launched the Pune Bus Day on November 1, 2012 – a positive response to the traffic congestion that Pune has been facing recently. This initiative created history by rallying 7 million citizens of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad to come together and participate in a program towards a common goal of reducing traffic congestion with improved public transportation.

The Tanishka Stree Prathishtha Abhiyan is yet another initiative that was conceived by Mr. Pawar. Launched with an objective of empowering women to find solutions to local-community-level issues, the Tanishka Forum has found an overwhelming response from women from all corners and cross sections of the state.

Yet another brainchild of Mr. Pawar is the recently launched Delivering Change Program, an initiative aimed at the socio-economic transformation of the state by bringing together policies and ideas emanating from the high-level boardrooms with the feedback and inputs from the ground level.

Apart from his role within the Sakal Media Group, Mr. Pawar holds the distinction of being on the board of several national and international organizations. He is an executive committee member of the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) as well as a member of the executive committee of the Indian Newspaper Society. He is on the International Board of the Global YPO (Young Presidents’ Organization), a member of the board of trustees of the NM Wadia Institute of Cardiology and Pune International Centre, Chairman of the Pune School for the Blind and heads the Sakal Social Foundation.


Supriya Sule, Director


A Director of the Company since 1996, Ms. Sule is a B.Sc (Microbiology) graduate and presently a member of the Indian Parliament in the 15th Lok Sabha.

Ms. Sule is actively associated with many social causes. She has worked closely with IL&FS and helped provide free books to 2,500 schools in and around the town of Baramati; she has been associated with Parivartan 2006 – a Program which helps Women in agriculture & empowers self-help group (SHG) by way of marketing of their products. Ms. Sule has also been involved with projects promoting education through mobile vans with the support of the Yashwantrao Chavan Open University and has been working for the upliftment of street children through the “Door step Schools” and the Chetna Apangmati Vikas Sanstha, Kolhapur.

She is also a Trustee of the Y. B. Chavan Centre, Nehru Centre, Mumbai, Indian Institute of Research and Development of Nomadic and Denotified Tribes, Satara and a number of schools dedicated for the education of children in rural areas.


R. A. Mashelkar, Director


Dr. Mashelkar is one of the top scientists of our country. A recipient of numerous prestigious awards including the S. S. Bhatnagar Prize and highest civilian awards of the country – the Padmashri and the Padmabhushan, Dr Mashelkar is a respected name in India and abroad for his chemical research. He has been conferred with numerous awards, fellowships and doctorates worldwide.


Balaji Tambe, Director


Dr. Balaji Tambe is a well-known name in the field of Ayurveda. He is the pioneer in spreading the use of Ayurveda among common people and has authored several articles on proper use of Ayurvedic medicines and remedies. The Sakal group publishes ‘Family Doctor’ edited by Dr. Balaji Tambe which is a health guide for our readers. ‘Garbhasanskar’, authored by him is a guide for a bright and healthy future generation.


Mrunalini A. Pawar, Director


Mrs. Pawar is the creative head for Young Buzz, a multifaceted children’s weekly brought out from the house of Sakal. The specially designed 32-page weekly for children provides news in a nutshell, happenings across the globe in a capsule. It covers just everything that a child needs to stay tuned to and is clubbed with the Newspapers in Education (NIE) Programme.

The children’s weekly and club was launched on June ’08 and has 20,000 members between the age group of 5 – 15 years in Pune and Goa. The Young Buzz Club works in tandem with students across the city towards inculcating various skills from Theatre to Mathematics. With the same values as those of the parent group – Educate, Entertain, Engage, Empower, Enlighten and Enrich – all events are designed with a view to translate these values into something tangible.

Mrs. Pawar is a student from St. Joseph’s Convent in Nagpur & did her graduation in Arts, specializing in Psychology from Lady Amritbai Daga College, Nagpur. Further, she pursued her Bachelors degree in Journalism from Nagpur & Masters in Communication Studies from the University of Pune.

Mrs. Pawar is actively involved in the Sakal Social Foundation and The Poona School and Home for the Blind trust.
